WVSU Calinog Campus

West Visayas State University (WVSU) Calinog Campus, previously known as Calinog Agricultural and Industrial College, evolved from a very small beginning. WVSU-Calinog was Calinog High School (CALHI) upon its establishment in 1947 through the procurement of former Provincial Board Member and Mayor of Calinog, Atty. Jose M. Celo and Congressman of the 4th District of Iloilo, Colonel Julian Chavez. Congressman Ricardo Y. Ladrido sponsored RA. No. 2399 converting the Calinog High School to Calinog Agricultural and Industrial School (CAIS).

Expansion of the school site was made from 8 has. to 52.3 has. The first principal was Mr. Eulalio Casa. He was followed by the first Vocational School Administrator, Mr. Ernesto V. Botin, who was succeeded by Mr. Daniel Delariarte, Jr. and later by Mr. Ernesto A. Rapista.

CAIS was elevated into a tertiary level status on July 15, 1977 thus the name Calinog Agricultural and Industrial College (CAIC) and was authorized to offer Two-Year Post Secondary Course – AAT (Associate in Agricultural Technology). BP Blg. 879, approved on January 1, 1986 through the Hon. Assemblyman Narciso D. Monfort, officially made CAIC a full-fledged tertiary education institution with Mr. Ernesto A. Rapista, its first vocational school superintendent Mr. Jovito T. Montaño, RES II was its first officer-in-charge when Mr. Rapista retired on August 1, 1994. Republic Act 7722, an Act creating the Commission on Higher Education approved by his Excellency Fidel V. Ramos placed CAIC under the umbrella of the Commission on Higher Education. Mr. Montaño was replaced by Mrs. Nenita P. Lingaya. CAIC and other nearby institutions have availed of the changes to finish a graduate course (MPA, MAEd and MA Agri. Productivity) which is a consortium program with the Aklan State College of Agriculture. In 1997, CHED authorized CAIC to offer new courses like BS in Hotel and Restaurant Management, BS in Information Technology, BS in Secondary Education major in English and BS Elementary Education major in English. Mrs. Corabella S. Castro, Vocational Instruction Supervisor III of the College was designated by CHED as officer-in-Charge from February to November 5, 1999 and on November 6, 1999 she got her appointment as Vocational School Superintendent. Under her administration, Science and Math majors were added to the teacher education courses and Food Technology was ladderized into a four-year course.

In consonance with the provisions of the Higher Education Act of 1994 and the Higher Education Modernization Act of 1997, Calinog Agricultural and Industrial College has been integrated with the West Visayas State University. The memorandum sets the implementing guidelines in the integration of CHED-Supervised Institutions (CSI’s) to State Universities and Colleges (SUC’s). At present WVSU Calinog Campus has 45 faculty members and 33 staff with Dr. Pablo E. Subong, Jr. as the Campus Administrator. Fifteen faculty members were transferred to the DECS together with the high school students and buildings. Under his administration, BS Entrepreneurship was added and the Agriculture curriculum was strengthened. He aims that WVSU Calinog Campus will become a Center of Excellence in Agriculture and one of the model schools in Agriculture in the whole Philippines.
